LETTERING
Every word I tattoo is born twice: first on paper, where I study the proportions and weight of each character in relation to the chosen area, and then on skin, where those letters become part of the body of the person who carries them. It is not writing: it is typographic sculpture on a living surface.
HOW I DESIGN
LETTERING
Tattooed lettering is perhaps the specialisation that requires more preparation than any other. A word or a phrase seems like the simplest thing to tattoo: in reality, making that text remain legible, proportionate and beautiful ten or twenty years from now requires knowledge that goes well beyond the ability to hold a needle steady. It requires typography, anatomy and a precise sense of visual rhythm.
Before designing any lettering, I ask the client to show me the chosen area in its natural resting position: the wrist at rest, the ribs during breathing, the forearm with the muscle relaxed. These observations determine everything. The wrist has a dorsal curve that, if ignored, makes the text look crooked the moment the arm is lowered. The ribs expand during inhalation, and lettering designed on a still chest shifts and distorts with every breath. Every area has its rules, and I respect all of them.
I never use fonts downloaded from the internet. Every lettering piece that leaves my studio in Fiumicino is hand-drawn, starting from an analysis of the character style most suited to the intended style and size. I work across very different styles: classic cursive, modern script, Gothic blackletter, minimal print. For every project I offer at least two variations during the consultation, so the client can choose the one that feels most like their own, and then I refine it on paper until the final approval before transferring it to skin.
Lettering that lasts over time depends on three precise factors: the minimum character size, which cannot fall below a technical threshold without compromising future legibility; the spacing between letters, which must have enough margin to prevent them from merging over the years; and the quality with which ink enters the skin. On this last point, I use certified inks and fine-line specific needles compliant with Lazio Regional health regulations. I receive clients from Rome, Ostia, Civitavecchia and Fiumicino airport.
